Yarn
Worsted weight–

(Recommend Cascade 220 Wool, 165 yards or .75 skein or similar, approx 75 grams.)

Needles
4.5/5 mm circ 16″
4 dpn 4.5/5 mm for crown (or whole hat if you like)

Gauge
20 st = 4 in (10 cm) in standard stockinette

Key
T2R=one stitch to cable needle, leave at back, k1, k st from cable
T2L=one st to cable needle, leave at front, k1, k st from cable

Alternate Method – Twist (no cable needle method)
T2R=knit into front of second stitch on left needle and don’t drop it, continue to knit into front of first stitch and drop both at once
T2L=knit into back of second stitch on left needle and don’t drop it, continue to knit into back of first stitch and drop both at once.

Cast on 100 st, join round and rib (k1, p1) in round 4 rows.

Next Row- setting row, P 2 tog, p4, k4 [(p5,k4) x 10]

Finishing
Cut 10″ end and draw thru remaining stitches with darning needle, pull up tightly and weave into wrong side, weave in cast on end, VOILA!

If you like a slightly shorter hat, leave out one or two of the full pattern repeats. If you have a smaller head, start with 90 st, and follow instructions as given with 10 pattern repeats instead of 11.

Pattern modifications for baby hat
Pattern modifications for bulky yarn (adult woman)

Yarn used Bernat Felting Wool 1 skein for bulky (85 yd, 100 gm)
Yarn used Generic Worsted wool for baby .5 skein (25 gm)

Finished size for adult woman fits 20-21″ head
Finished size of baby is for 15″ head (approx 3-6 mo)

Needle size for baby 4.5 mm dpns
Needle size for bulky adult 6 mm dpns


Instructions for both sizes:
Cast on 72 St divide to 3 needles and join in round.
Rib in (k1, p1) four rows.

Setting row
(p5, k4) x 8

Row 1–[(p5, T2R, T2L) x 8]
Row 2–(p5, k4) x 8
Row 3–same as 2
Row 4–same as 2

Repeat rows 1-4 for 3 sets (12 rows)

Decrease row–[(p2tog, p3, t2R, t2L) x 8 64 st on needles remain
Row 2–(p4, k4) x 8
Row 3–same as 2
Row 4–same as 2

Row 1–(p4, t2R, t2L) x 8
Row 2–(p4, k4) x 8
Row 3–same as 2
Row 4–same as 2

Repeat these four rows 2 more times for adult hat, 1 more time for baby hat.

Decreasing crown
[p2tog x 2, t2r, t2L] x 8 48 st on needles remain
(p1, k4) x 8

[p2tog, t2R, t2L] x 8 40 st on needles remain

(p1, k2tog x 2) x 8 24 st on needles remain

cut a 10 inch tail and thread thru remaining stitches with darning needle, pull up stitches tightly and weave in end on wrong side firmly. Weave in starting end. VOILA!
